The night before, I checked my iPhone apps (MySunset, Meteo Earth, and Clear Outside) to see what the weather (specifically the clouds) would be doing the next morning. I was shown a 49% chance of color via a few of my digital options:), with the high clouds (the color producers being on the high %).... Is it worth getting up early for? Hmmmm... gotta workout, shower, all the things that get shuffled to go out with the camera FIRST.
I decided that if my body wanted to wake me up early, I 'may' go out. Well... body got me up at 6:20. Sunrise is around 7:15. I peeked outside and saw the faintest tiny hint of pink on the horizon, and was reminded that the high clouds were at like 99%. Aaw heck. If I don't go, I'm going to regret this. If I do go, this pink blip is probably all I'll get......
Just go. You NEVER know what will happen or what you will be given 'besides' the color in the sky.
I quickly packed my gear, and headed to the closest shooting location to my house. A small lake that I was hoping still had the mirror-like ice layer. While the lake was still frozen, it had a layer of snow about 1/4" thick. Enough to cover the beauty of the ice with a white expanse of snow. No reflections or real points of interest.
I noticed the pink blip fading, so continued through the town to another location, and found this wonderful scene as the blip exploded with color for a few minutes, then faded, and was gone. Without the glowing footprints marching across the ice to the shanty, this is a different image.
This is a reminder not to give up, just because the initial idea of the trip isn't coming to fruition. Keep pushing forward, as we don't know what's around the next bend.
